What is my Dutch level?

In level 1 you will learn how to:

• Introduce yourself
  Ik heet Eric, ik kom uit Australië en ik woon nu een jaar in Nederland.
• Conjugate verbs in the present tense
• Use the correct word order in present tense
  Ze eten elke dag een broodje kaas.
• Use an adjective before a noun
  Het huis is duur – het dure huis.
  De les is moeilijk – de moeilijke les.
• Make a comparison
  Nederland is kleiner dan Frankrijk.
• Construct sentences with an auxiliary verb
  We willen vanavond pizza eten.
  Hij moet zijn huiswerk vandaag maken.
• Express your opinion with vinden and houden van
  Ik vind voetballen niet leuk.
  Ik hou van koekjes.
• Construct sentences in perfectum (present perfect / past participle)
  Ik heb gisteren met een vriendin koffie gedronken.
  Ik ben op zaterdag naar de bioscoop geweest.
• Order something in a restaurant or bar

In level 2 you will learn how to:

• Talk about what you did in the weekend
• Construct sentences with separable verbs
  De leraar legt de les aan de cursisten uit.
  Ik heb het licht gisteravond niet uitgedaan.
• Conjugate verbs in the perfectum and imperfectum past tenses (present perfect and past simple)
• Make indirect sentences with a new word order
  Ik denk dat ik morgen met mijn vrienden naar de bioscoop ga.
• Construct sentences with reflexive verbs
  Ik moet me op de les concentreren.
  Hij verveelt zich op school.
• Use the word ‘er’ in different functions
  Ben je weleens in Parijs geweest? Ja, ik ben er vorig jaar geweest.
  Hoeveel broers heeft zij? Ze heeft er twee.
• Use the ‘om te’ structure
  Ik vind het interessant om een nieuwe taal te leren.
  Ik ben naar Nederland gekomen om een nieuwe baan te zoeken.
• Use the imperative (i.e. give instructions)
  Spreek Nederlands met me!

In level 3 you will learn how to:

• Construct sentences with verbs with a fixed preposition, including the so-called changing words
  Hebben jullie vandaag over het werk gepraat?
  Nee, we hebben er nog niet over gepraat.
  Ik ben nergens bang voor.
  Waar zullen we vanavond naar kijken?
  Ik heb daar geen zin in.
• Use common conjunctions as maar, omdat en als and learn about their influence on the word order
  Ik kan je niet helpen omdat ik morgen moet werken.
  Ik kan het aan je uitleggen als je het niet begrijpt.
• Use the auxiliary verb hoeven
  Jullie hoeven vandaag geen huiswerk te maken.
• Express how you feel, talk about your mood
• Talk about your opinion on light societal topics
  ‘Ik vind het leuk dat Nederlandse mensen een beetje direct zijn.’

In level 4 you will learn how to:

• Use the two forms of the present continuous in Dutch
  Wat ben je aan het doen?
  Ik zit mijn huiswerk af te maken.
• Make a relative clause
  Kun je me de fles geven die op de tafel staat?
  De bal waarmee de kinderen spelen, is blauw.
• Talk about objects in Dutch (i.e. using verbs like staan, liggen, zitten and zetten, leggen, stoppen)
  Waar ligt mijn agenda? O, die heb ik op tafel neergelegd.
  Waar staat je auto? Ik heb hem in de garage gezet.
• Talk about similarities and differences
  Beide jongens zitten in dezelfde klas, maar ze zijn niet even oud.
  Alle mensen zijn gelijk, maar ze zijn ook allemaal verschillend.
• Speak about the content of basic newspaper articles and express your opinion on them

In level 5 you will learn how to:

• Construct sentences in the conditional tense with zouden
  Ik zou je wel willen helpen, maar ik heb geen tijd.
  Als ik jou was, zou ik wat vaker naar de Nederlandse televisie kijken.
  Ik had het niet zonder mijn vrienden kunnen doen.
• Use verbs that can be combined with a ‘te + infinitive’ structure
  Ik heb geprobeerd mijn huiswerk zelf te maken.
  Ik hoop snel vloeiend in het Nederlands te worden.
• Understand the difference between zichzelf and zelf
  Ze heeft iets leuks voor zichzelf gekocht.
  Ze koopt haar kleding altijd zelf.
• Use conjunctions and prepositions that are related to cause and effect
  Ik kijk elke dag naar de Nederlandse televisie, zodat ik de taal sneller leer.
  Mijn vlucht is geannuleerd vanwege het slechte weer.
• Use conjunctions of time
  Ik bel je hierover zodra ik meer informatie heb.
• Have small talk in an informal setting

In level 6 you will learn how to:

• Talk about scientific topics
• Use the verbs lijken, schijnen and blijken
  Pieter schijnt een nieuwe vriendin te hebben.
  Mijn collega blijkt aardiger te zijn dan ik dacht.
• Understand the difference between toen, als and wanneer, especially in the past tense.
  Toen ik jong was, was ik gek op paarden.
  Ik mocht vroeger buitenspelen als ik niet te veel huiswerk had.
• Give an advice to someone who has a problem
• Make passive sentences
  In Nederland wordt er veel kaas gegeten.
  Dit huis is in 1920 gebouwd.

• Use conjunctions and prepositions that show contrast
  Alhoewel het vandaag prachtig weer is, blijf ik liever binnen.
  Hoe moeilijk de Nederlandse taal ook is, ik wil het toch leren.

The Gevorderden level is taught completely in Dutch. In this level you will:

• Implement all structures that you have learnt in everyday language
• Obtain more challenging vocabulary and put it into practice right away
• Talk about various topics in Dutch
• Take your reading skills to the next level
• Write paragraphs on different topics

The content of the Gevorderden level is different each time, so you can participate in it as often as necessary.

The Specialisten level is taught completely in Dutch. In this level you will:

• Have discussions in Dutch on difficult topics
• Express yourself in challenging situations
• Listen to native speakers at a high level
• Read challenging texts to obtain new vocabulary
• Do extensive writing exercises
